Turn-based RPGs that respect your time
Mobile RPGs have a bad reputation, and some of it is earned. Too many pad their runtime with filler fights and energy timers. But there's a quiet shelf of good ones that treat you like an adult with a limited evening.
Ember Hollow Saga is the one I keep recommending. The turn-based combat rewards planning around weaknesses and turn order, and the harder fights make you actually rethink your party. Nothing feels like busywork.
The thing I look for first in these games is whether progression respects the player. Can you make meaningful build choices? Do boss fights test those choices? If the answer is yes, I'll forgive a clunky menu, which Ember Hollow Saga definitely has.
A tip for anyone starting one of these: don't dump every point into damage early. A balanced party survives the surprise difficulty spike that most of these games hide in their second act.
A good phone RPG is the perfect slow-burn game. Ten minutes on a train, a longer session on the couch, and the story carries you through either way.
